Rock pools, shells and fishing at the end of the road

Do this before anything else. Walk across Kusweg, take the dune path, and you are on the sand. At low to mid tide the rock pools open up and children can spend a whole afternoon on shells, gullies and clear water without going near anything deep. Bring shoes with grip — the rock is slippery — and keep an eye on the tide turning. There is no lifeguard on this beach. To fish off the rocks you need a recreational shore-angling permit; the Post Office in Great Brak sells them and it takes ten minutes.

Getting your bearings

Three directions from the front door.

Almost everything worth doing falls into one of three runs, and the trick to a good week is not mixing them. Anything under twenty minutes — Klein Brak, Great Brak, Hartenbos, Mossel Bay and The Point — is simply local, and fits around any of them.

West — up to 45 min

The quiet side

Vleesbaai, Boggomsbaai and Fransmanshoek, the Dragon Dune sandboarding, the Oystercatcher Trail, and Jakkalsvlei for wine on the way home. Empty beaches and almost no traffic.

Inland — 1 h 20 and up

Over the pass to the Karoo

The Robinson Pass to Oudtshoorn: the Cango Caves, Cango Wildlife Ranch, the ostrich farms, Karusa and Buffelsdrift — and, for a long day, the Swartberg Pass and Meiringspoort. A different climate in an hour.

East — 30 min to 2 h 30

Down the Garden Route

George, Herolds Bay and Victoria Bay, then Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, with Tsitsikamma at the far end. Go in order and come back the same way — the N2 is the only road.

If the weather turns

Keep it on one side of the house. Westward: Clay Cafe and Garden Walk at Hartenbos, then the Dias Museum and Blasters in Mossel Bay. Eastward: the Outeniqua Transport Museum in George, the mall and Redberry Farm.

Food-first Saturday

Wilderness viewpoint first, then Wild Oats market in Sedgefield, oysters in Knysna, home before dark. In that order — the other way round makes you double back.

Whale-season day

Morning watch from the terrace, St Blaize walk, Point lunch, sunset back at Tergniet.

The big road trip

Robberg or Storms River, Tsitsikamma forest, optional Bloukrans bungee. Start early.

Slow inland day

Without getting in the car

Things to do on your doorstep in Tergniet.

Tergniet is a quiet residential village, not a resort — which is the point of it. The shops are in Great Brak, seven minutes away.

No. 1 for kids

Tidal pools, shells and fishing

Sheltered rock pools, shell collecting, little gullies to explore and simple fishing off the rocks, a minute from the door. Low to mid tide gives children the most room and the safest footing. No lifeguard, and a permit is needed to fish.

Mont Aime restaurant, Strandloper Cafe, wine bar, play area, gallery and gift shop about 150 m down the beach.

Long sand in both directions, plus the quiet beach road for runners, prams and evening walks.

Only the Mossel Bay town beaches have lifeguards, and only in peak season. Swim where other people are swimming, and check the tide before you take children onto rock.

In whale season you often do not need a boat at all — mothers and calves come close in along this stretch of coast.

The practical five minutes

Shops, fuel, a doctor and the airport

Groceries: Great Brak River, 7 min — enough for a full shop, plus a pharmacy, a Post Office and fuel. Garden Walk at Hartenbos is about 12 minutes for a bigger Checkers, Food Lover’s Market and Dis-Chem, and the Garden Route Mall in George is about 25. Nearest hospital is Mossel Bay, 20 minutes. George Airport (GRJ) is 20 minutes, with direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town.

You will need a car: the beach and Seeplaas are on foot, but everything else on this page needs one and there is no useful public transport. For fishing off the rocks you need a recreational shore-angling permit — the Post Office in Great Brak sells them and it takes ten minutes. Ask us about braai wood and fresh fish when you arrive; the best answer changes with the season.
